How to Raise a Dispute in Your CIBIL Report: Step-by-Step Guide The Credit Information Bureau (India) Limited (CIBIL) is one of the most trusted credit bureaus in India. It collects and maintains data related to loans and credit cards that banks and financial institutions provide. This data is used to generate your credit report and assign a CIBIL score which lenders use to decide if you are eligible for a loan or credit card. We have been assisting our clients for many years and have handled cases where CIBIL or other credit rating agencies reported serious mismatches to banks and loan providers. In many situations, loans and credit cards have been wrongly linked to an individual due to similar names, dates of birth, or other common details. The people often face loan rejections or unnecessary inquiries on their credit reports because of this. That is why it is important to check your CIBIL report on a monthly or at least quarterly basis and raise a dispute immediately if any discrepancy is found. Identify the Error The first step is to identify the mistake in your credit report. You can download your CIBIL report from the official CIBIL website or from the other RBI-approved fintech platforms. Also, CIBIL allows you to get one free credit report per year. You must read everything carefully after downloading the report. Thoroughly read and check your personal information, loans not belonging to you, duplicate accounts, missed payments even after paying on time or loans shown as active even after closure. Preparing for Dispute Submission It is very important to review the full report carefully and collect all the supporting documents before raising a dispute. While reviewing the report look for the information in your report with your bank or loan statements. If you find an error or mismatch, then you will need to contact CIBIL to get it changed. Also, take note of the Control Number from your report as this number is unique to each report and will be required during the dispute process. Raising a Dispute Online The good thing is that you can raise your dispute online on the official website of CIBIL. That means you do not have to visit any office or submit the documents physically. Also, the online platform is easy to use and allows you to raise a dispute from your phone anytime. Follow these steps to raise a dispute: • First of all, log in using your myCIBIL account and if you do not have an account, create one using your email and mobile number. • After that, make a list of all the errors and disputes that you want to file. • Then, click on the “Raise a Dispute” link which is available in the bottom of web page. • Choose the part of your report that you would like to file a dispute from the following: o Account Section o Personal Information o Employment Information o Credit Application History o Contact Information o Other Information • For example, in case an unknown account displays on your account, check the “Account does not belong to me” and add it to the dispute list. • Similarly, submit disputes from other parts of your report and finally submit the dispute for resolution. Dispute Review Process by CIBIL CIBIL will contact the concerned bank and lender that provided the information once your dispute is submitted. That is because CIBIL itself does not make any changes to your report or personal information. The bank and NBFC verify this issue and send back a confirmation to CIBIL. You can log in to your myCIBIL account anytime and check the dispute status from the “Dispute Centre”. Possible Outcomes Once the review is complete, CIBIL will update you about the outcome. If the lender accepts your correction the report will be updated and you will get a revised credit score. If they reject your dispute, the CIBIL will close the request and share the reason with you. Sometimes, only a small part of your dispute may be accepted and the rest of the things remain unchanged. If that happens, you can raise another dispute with stronger supporting documents. Post-Resolution Steps Once your dispute is resolved, download the updated CIBIL report and go through it again to check if the corrections have been made. If the changes are not visible or partially updated, then you can file a follow-up dispute by referring to the new control number and attaching stronger proof. It is very important to keep track of the dispute status and check your report after the resolution to avoid a long-term impact on your credit score. Tips to Avoid Future Disputes If you want to keep your credit report free of any disputes, then you should follow a few basic habits. These simple steps can help reduce the chances of errors appearing in your CIBIL report: • You should make it a habit to review your CIBIL report on a monthly or at least quarterly basis as it helps you to catch mistakes early. • Once your loan is paid off, collect the loan closure certificate or No Dues Certificate and keep it safely. • Make sure your name, PAN, date of birth and contact information are correct with all banks and credit institutions. • Always store your bank statements, closure letters and repayment proofs as backup in case of future disputes. When to Escalate If your dispute is not solved within 30-45 days or the corrections are not made then you may need to take further steps. You can contact CIBIL customer care by phone or email, explain to them your issue and provide them with your dispute ID so they can investigate further. The escalation is the last step but it may be necessary if your credit report remains incorrect. Final Thoughts The lenders look at your credit history before giving approval whether you want to take a home loan, personal loan or credit card. That is why your CIBIL report plays a major role in your financial life. Even a small error in your report can lead to the rejection or higher interest rates. Thus, every individual should take responsibility for regularly checking and correcting their credit report. However, if you are still confused about what to do, then consider taking help from experts like Loan Resolve Services. We help individuals across India in reviewing and correcting their CIBIL reports with the right guidance and support. Our experts make the dispute process simple and smooth whether you are dealing with wrong loan entries, duplicate accounts or outdated data.
